Planning and Design of ALEAP Green Industrial Park (A-GRIP), Nandigama

Within the context of the Indo-German Environment Partnership (IGEP) programme of the Indo German Development Cooperation, GIZ provided technical support to the Association of Lady Entrepreneurs of Andhra Pradesh (ALEAP) for site master planning of the Green Industrial Park (GRIP) project at Nandigama catering to women entrepreneurs. Several aspects of environment, resource efficiency and gender aspects were integrated into to the planning of the industrial park, besides using the benchmarks set by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). A team of national and international experts with several years of standing experience in applied research and collaboration services were brought together for this task. With the enthusiastic and active cooperation of ALEAP for taking forward this initiative of gender inclusive and environment friendly site master planning, we are sure that the Green Industrial Park would become a new landmark and set an example for other industrial parks in the country and the region.

The challenges of urban poverty in Asia are daunting, and investments in urban infrastructure play a key role in addressing these. Cities in Asia need the will, the skills and the resources for working actively towards pro-poor development. The long-term aim of the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) is ‘to contribute to the promotion of sustainable and pro-poor urban development, leading to improved environmental and living conditions for all in medium-sized Asian cities’ (2015 CDIA Operational Guidelines).

This Gender Strategy and Action Plan expresses CDIA’s commitment to gender equality as a goal and gender mainstreaming as a strategy. It outlines CDIA’s view on the need for and approach to gender equality. The results of CDIA’s efforts vis-à-vis gender equality are linked to the Performance Measurement System and Framework and part of the continuous monitoring and evaluation of outputs and outcomes. The status and progress of the action plan will be presented in a bi-annual Gender Progress Report.

CDIA Checklist for Inclusive Urban Infrastructure Development

Investments in urban infrastructure play a key role in addressing poverty in Asian cities. The long-term goal of CDIA is the promotion of sustainable, pro-poor, and inclusive urban development, leading to improved environmental and living conditions for all households in medium-sized Asian cities. All CDIA interventions aim at making an impact on the overarching development goals of:
-environmental sustainability,
– climate change adaptation and/or mitigation,
– urban poverty reduction, and
– improved urban governance.
Urban poverty is a multidimensional reality, and urban poor communities live with deprivations that have many shapes and forms. The “urban poor” are consequently defined not only by levels of income, lack of appropriate access to public (municipal) services, and general informality but also by other characteristics that may vary from country to country and from city to city in the Asian developing region.

Vulnerability Analysis for the Lam Pa Chi Sub River Basin of the Mae Klong River Basin

The aim of this study is to compile available data about the basin in order to conduct a comprehensive basin inventory and to provide the information through an online data base (RBIS) accessible to stakeholders. Besides, the study has created packed *.kmz files and uploaded them to Google Earth providing an alternative for analyzing spatial attributes of studied river basins. Information on the climatic conditions – the key driver for natural hazards in the region- is analyzed in detail and, where available, climate change scenarios are described.

The DPI and DoNRE intend to implement a pilot on vacuum sewer collection in An Hai Bac Ward with 110 households to gain concrete experiences on the technology which apparently is apt for waste water collection and treatment in Da Nang because of the high ground water table, narrow walkways/accessibility to connect septic tanks, the pollution of the groundwater and the river with coli bacteria and the unaffordable costs of conventionally separated waste water and drainage water systems to be installed.

The main source of water supply for Korat City is from Lamtaklong dam. A total of around 450,000 people in the 4 districts and surrounding area of Korat city depend on this water source for livelihood and irrigation. There is water scarcity in the dry season. The raw water is pumped into the city for treatment/purification and distribution, through 60 Kilometres pipeline. Water losses from pipes are about 35-45 %. The Municipality pays roughly Baht 6 million for electricity for water pumping per month (for Lamtaklong and Makhamtao stations alone).
